MYAGI (a.k.a SOLE CLAW) (a.k.a. Andrew Mavor)..... For a lot of young artists in today’s music scene, living up to the expectations of presumptuous critics and finicky fans can be an impossible task. The pressures that go with being named a break out talent can be enough to drown budding musicians after first seeding. Enter Canadian producer and performer Myagi, who has been touted as the “Next Don of North American Breaks.” His tracks have appeared on compilations by UK Break Beat heavy weights Plump DJs, American hit makers Crystal Method and received plays by B-Boy legend Fatboy Slim. All of this attention has vaulted him into the genres elite. What I found out in a recent interview is that Myagi has coolly brushed aside any pressure and let his natural ability to write songs, whether they be Cheeky Dance Floor Smashes or Funked Out Grooves for a Sunday afternoon, reign supreme. When asked about the origin of his most popular moniker, Myagi, Andrew is blunt; “Karate Kid,” he deadpans referring to the popular character Mr. Myagi in the cult eighties flick. He then continues, giving us insight into his early musical roots. “I was in a high school band, and that was the name we chose. I got tired of working with other people so I started buying synthesizers, a couple drum machines and started working on electronic music.” Influenced by the early works of electronic pioneers Meat Beat Manifesto, Freddy Fresh and Fatboy Slim, Myagi later resolved “this is the kind of stuff I want to write,” figuring he started writing his solo material as far back as 1996. Nowadays Myagi boasts one of the heftiest catalogues of released material in dance music. It is rumored he has a massive back catalogue of tracks. When confronted with how many songs he has written and completed he takes a moment to think about it before divulging, “Six to seven hundred, I would imagine.” On the topic of creating music he explains; “It’s better to write as much as you possibly can and to find the good ideas in the whole lot of them. You know you sit down one day and work on a tune and listen to it the next day and you’re like shit! What was I thinking? That’s kind of the beauty of it, is that you can look back over a gigantic number of ideas that you’ve had, bits and pieces, polish it, finish it and it comes out.” Toronto Canada's most renowned Breaks artist returns as his profile has risen to A List on the international Breaks scene! Newly signed on to do remix work for Finger Lickin’ Records and for Break Beat super group the Crystal Method, Myagi has cemented himself at the forefront of the big room, Funk sound with a string of releases. Major players including Fatboy Slim, Plump DJs, Adam Freeland, Meat Katie, and Soul of Man are all hammering his hit records. Myagi's multi-genre approach to dance music has matured into a true journey through B-boy and rave culture, Mashing up past and present in one of the most High Energy, Pounding experiences a club could play host to. Whether touring the globe to play Ministry of Sound in London or at home playing Toronto’s massive The Guvernment, Myagi’s high energy Mash up of originals, remixes and personal edits have made him North America’s next Break Beat superstar! 2Wars,Finger Lickin', Womp!
